16 May 2010
Hello
Everyone
How
nice to get out of Sydney for the May meeting, kindly hosted by Mark and
Vicki at Orange. There was some nice marigold and amethyst autumn colour
starting and the weather wasn’t too cold. We took the opportunity to
spend a couple of extra days and rented a quaint cottage set in the
middle of vineyards between Orange and Molong. What a change from the CBD
to see kangaroos grazing by the front door and warm ourselves around an
open fire.
The
meeting weekend coincided with the Cowra Bottle Show, which I know a
number of members attended. While I didn’t get any carnival glass I did
pick up a number of other glass items of interest, so it was a good visit
for me.
Linnwood
Exhibition
A
number of members have already expressed interest in exhibiting at
Linnwood House on Sunday, 14 November (the day after our November
meeting). They are:
- Iris,
Jean, John & Ray – theme to be determined
- Lesley
& Bob – to be determined
- Mark,
Vicki & Steve – Australian carnival
- Lorraine
& John – flower patterns, or How Does Your Garden Grow?
- Colin –
jugs
- Andrew –
melon rib vases.
Last
year we had four display tables, two large (and one small) display
cabinets, one sales table and one meet & greet table. This year I
would like to consider having two tables combined for meet & greet
and sales, so they can be together and offer more sales space.
Wentworth Park
Antiques and Collectibles Fair
As
many of you will already know, Lesley, Lorna and I have a stall at the
Wentworth Park Collectibles Fair every month. There are over 150 stalls
selling all kinds of collectibles, including carnival and other glass. If
you’re visiting, pop in and say hello. We’re located next to the first
aid post. The fair is on the first Sunday of every month at Wentworth
Park Greyhound Track, Wattle Street, Glebe, 9am to 3 pm, $5 entry ($10
early bird at 8:00am). It’s all under cover, there’s parking on site and
it’s close to the Wentworth Park Light Rail stop.
AGM and 2011
meeting dates
The
next meeting at Jean and Ray’s is the Annual General Meeting. So please
consider whether you would be interested in standing for any of the
positions. Any group is only as strong as the interest and involvement of
its members and committee.
Remember
that you must be financial in order to vote, so make sure you have your
membership up-to-date at the meeting.
We
will also be asking for offers to host the four meetings for 2011. We are
very reliant on members’ generosity in opening their homes and
collections to other members. As I’ve previously indicated, I’m not in a position
to host any meetings, so I’m particularly grateful to those members who
do make their homes available.
Pat
and Phyllis Fineran have already kindly offered
to host the May meeting in Brisbane, somewhat further afield than we
usually travel. However, this gives members who would like to see Pat and
Phyllis’ collections the opportunity to make arrangements well in
advance.
The Glass
Collectors Society Adelaide Exhibition, 30 & 31 October
The
SA based Glass Collectors Society will be having their second glass
exhibition on Saturday, 30 and Sunday 31, October at Payneham Library
Complex (corner of Turner and OG Road, Felixstowe,
South Australia) 10:00am to 4:00pm both days.
There
will be a wide range of glass on display (15 exhibitors to date), including
carnival glass. I will be exhibiting there, but from one of my other
interest areas of post-war Scandinavian and Czech glass.
All
members would be most welcome to visit, and you’d be able to combine it
with trips to the local antique centres and markets.
Happy
and safe carnival hunting.
Andrew
Mitchell.
