20 November 2011
President’s
Message
I
trust you all had a good Christmas and I wish everyone the best for this
year.
Our
next meeting at Lorraine and John’s in the beautiful Blue Mountains will
feature the Dutch auction, so please bring an item to be auctioned and
the usual raffle prize. You will also need to bring your lunch.
Linnwood
House has been booked for 11 November 2012 for our exhibition.
We should get a good crowd there as the Rolls-Royce Owners Club of NSW
will be there. So not only can we drool over our glass but the ‘Rollers’
as well.
Fryerstown,
Victoria, is well known to many members and a few of the members make it
a yearly trip. Bob and I took the journey again this year leaving on the
Tuesday and decided to go the ‘scenic route’. This entailed driving 1,350
kilometres to Castlemaine.
We
called in to see Chris Turnbull (one of our members) who has an antique
shop in Milton. Was he surprised to see us! It is always good to catch up
with him.
I
took over the driving when we left Milton and soon realised the car was
not ‘right’. I said to Bob, “This car is not right”. His answer, “Yes, I
know”. “When did you know?” was my reply. “Just after we got out of
Sydney” was his answer.
I
carried on driving and was getting more worried with each kilometre I
drove. The car would not go above eighty and the accelerator was flat to
the floor. A few kilometres on Bob saw an NRMA breakdown van on the other
side of the road. “Stop and do a U-turn” he said, which I proceeded to
do, pulling up behind the NRMA.
Bob
got out of the car and explained to the NRMA man that the car would not
accelerate when out of cruise control and Bob was asked to follow the van
to the garage, which was down the road.
Bob
started the car then stopped and bent forward. I had no idea what he was doing
as by this time all sorts of horrors were going through my mind. Suddenly
Bob let out a yell making me jump a mile, then he turned to me with a
sickly grin on his face and the floor mat in his hands – the mat had
curled up and was wedged under the accelerator pedal!!!!!
Caught
up with the NRMA man and Bob explained what had transpired. “At least
that is one problem solved,” said the NRMA man.
We
stayed overnight at Merimbula and continued on our journey the following
day driving through Eden, then over the border passing through Cann River, Orbost, Bairnsdale and Rosedale etc, to reach Westmeadows in Melbourne.
Our
reason for going to Westmeadows was to meet Betty Doody,
an ACE member I had ‘met’ through eBay. Betty made us feel at home,
plying us with tea, cakes and biscuits and then showing us her great
collection.
Have
to say there were a couple of pieces I would love to have brought home.
After
leaving Betty’s we carried on to Castlemaine arriving at our hotel just
before 6pm feeling very tired and hungry. It had been a long day, having
left Merimbula at 8:15am.
The
following day (Thursday) we did a visit of the local antique shops, then
on to the Mill Antique Centre at Daylesford where I picked up a
‘Poinsettia & Lattice’ bowl in pastel marigold and some Aussie
pottery. We then did a very quick drive to Ballarat, before making our
way back to the hotel.
We
met up with Kevin & Cindy and Glenda & Jim Jackman
(Victorian members of our club) who were also staying at the same hotel
for dinner. Colin and his partner Dianne who were staying elsewhere also
joined us.
Friday
was the day we went to Fryerstown for the antique fair, where we bumped
into Dot and Bob and a fellow stall holder from Wentworth Park.
I
did buy a beautiful European comport called ‘Garland and Bows’, plus some
small pieces of Aussie pottery.
We
spent five or so hours at the fair then went back to the hotel and
collapsed on the bed till dinner time.
That night was a fun but very late
night as my nephew and his fiancée drove up from Melbourne to join us for
dinner and were introduced to “those mad Carnival collectors”.
“Those
mad collectors”, when told my nephew was getting married this year, all
came out about our ‘weddings’ and some of us have been there more than
once LOL.
What
a great way to end four days of our visit to Victoria.
Lesley.
