24 June 2001
Sunday,
24 June saw 19 club members gather at the home of Gary and Cathy Campbell
in Narellan for our second meeting of the year. We also welcomed visitors
Gloria and Peter McGann from South Penrith as visitors, and by the time
they left they had signed up as new members. Welcome Gloria and Peter!
This
meeting was our annual general meeting, and Allan Farrell and Alan
Christofferson supervised the election of the Committee of Management for
the 2001-02 year. Office holders for the coming year are:
·
President: Wayne Delahoy
·
Vice President: Gary Campbell
·
Secretary: Catherine Campbell
·
Treasurer: John Westren
·
Committee Members: Patricia Nissen
Rhonda Delahoy
Jean Rogers
Allan
Farrell was confirmed as the newsletter editor for another year, and Iris
Westren has taken on the role of Librarian.
Both
John Westren and Allan Farrell have indicated their desire to hand over
their responsibilities to someone new next year, so please give some
thought throughout the year to whether you may be able to take on one of
these roles. The tasks are not onerous and your efforts will benefit
everyone in the club.
As the
incoming President I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ray
Rogers for his sterling effort in steering the club through what has been
a difficult period. The club has weathered the storm under Ray’s expert
guidance and has emerged stronger and healthier than ever. We are deeply
indebted to you Ray. I would also like to thank the outgoing Committee of
Management for their efforts over the past year. Most of the members are
continuing this year, but I welcome Gary Campbell to the Committee as our
new Vice President, and Jean Rogers as a new committee member. A big
thank you to retiring committee member Anne Tebbutt for all her efforts
throughout the year.
Members
were asked to bring to this meeting their first piece of carnival glass
and describe how they got started in collecting carnival glass. Once
again we saw some beautiful glass, and heard some interesting stories.
Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences with us. Our
grandmothers have sure got a lot to answer for!
Our
new constitution has now been formally accepted by the NSW Dept of Fair
Trading. Copies have been made available to members attending the
meetings recently, and all new members will be sent a copy of the
constitution along with their letter of welcome. If you don’t yet have a
copy of our new constitution and would like one please contact Cathy
Campbell, our ardent Secretary, and she will send you one straight away.
The
Carnival Glass Collectors Association of Australia has joined the 21st
Century by establishing its own Internet site.
The
site is designed to publicise the existence and activities of our club,
to provide a general resource on carnival glass, and (in addition to this
wonderful newsletter) to enable club members who can’t make it to the
quarterly meetings to stay in touch with what is happening in our club.
Some of the pages it contains are:
- What is Carnival Glass?
- Australian Carnival Glass
- An extensive gallery of photos showing
Australian, European, American, Indian and contemporary carnival
glass, along with estimates of current values in Australia
- Club objectives
- Club officers
- Last meeting
- Coming meetings
- How to join
- Latest news
- Library
- Carnival Glass acronyms
- Carnival Glass colours
- Club directory
- Links to other sites
If you
have access to the Internet I urge you all to take a few minutes to visit
the site and check out the information available there. If you have
friends or relatives with Internet access who are interested in finding
out more about carnival glass refer them to our Internet site.
If you
have any suggestions for amendments or additions to the site please let
me know, as I would like the site to be as complete and accurate as
possible. I am also always looking for new photos to add to the site, so
please send along any photos you think may add value to the site.
Club
members Rob & Dorothy Butler have entered the antique trade by
opening their own store at Windsor. It’s called Bob & Dot’s Antiques
& Old Wares, and it can be found at 394 George St, Windsor, NSW 2756.
Their telephone number is (02) 4577-4055. They have done a beautiful job
of restoring a run down old shop, and have a great collection of
interesting old things for you to look at, so next time you’re passing
through Windsor, drop in and say ‘Hi’ to Rob and Dorothy. I believe they
are open Thursday through Sunday each week.
At the
next meeting I would like to set the schedule of meetings for 2001, so
please check your diaries in advance and come prepared to suggest dates.
We also need four volunteers to host the meetings for next year, so
please consider whether you can help out in that regard. We would love to
visit your home, and I promise we are all house trained!
At the
next meting I would also like to set the themes for each of the meetings
in the coming year. So please bring along all your ideas. To get the
creative juices going I would like to throw the following suggestions
into the pool for consideration:
·
Starry, starry night – patterns including stars
·
Legs eleven – shapes with feet
·
Boo boos – pieces that went wrong somehow
·
Waterworld – patterns with a watery theme
·
All bottled up – bottles
·
Milk and sugar anyone? – creamer and sugar sets
·
The long and the short of it – vases of different
sizes in the one pattern
·
Not a leg to stand on – pieces that cannot or do
not stand on their own (ie, pieces that need support – car vases, brides
vases, wall vases etc, or pieces that come with stands anyway)
The
idea would be that you only bring along pieces that fit this theme, or
other pieces that you need some identifying. What do you think? Any other
ideas?
Our
next meeting is on 16 September at the home of Iris & John Westren in
Lugarno. We didn’t set the theme for this meeting, so I would like to
suggest the following:
·
A rose by any other name – rose bowls and/or rose
patterns
Let’s
get all those rose bowls and rose patterns out of the cupboards and take
them for an outing to Lugarno.
Well
that’s enough from me. Here’s to another successful year of carnival
glass collecting, and to the motto of our club which is:
"To
provide a friendly forum for the exchange of information about Carnival
Glass."
Regards
Wayne
Delahoy
