24 November 2001
What a glorious day it was in November when
23 members gathered for our 2001 Christmas meeting at the home of Ray and Olive White in
Bathurst. The weather was warm and sunny, and so was the atmosphere at the meeting. I have to say that it was one of the most enjoyable meetings I have ever attended,
with everyone joining in the fun and fellowship of the day. The club truly lived up to its
motto which is 'To provide a friendly forum for the exchange of information about carnival
glass.' The photos on this page will give you an idea of the good times and great glass we
all enjoyed on the day. Those of you who couldn't make it to the meeting really missed out
on a great day.
Ray and Olive's son, Neil, Neil's wife Robyn and son Roy
cooked up a wonderful Christmas lunch for us, and, combined with some beer from one of
Allan Farrell's famous beer barrels, it made the perfect accompaniment to a great day.
Thank you guys for a great lunch!
The 'Show and Tell' theme was compotes and cake salvers,
and it was amazing to see the variety of patterns and colours in these shapes from
manufacturers and countries all over the world. Thank you to everyone who brought along
pieces to share with us.
We managed to
raise $353 for the club's coffers through the raffle and dutch auction, and everyone took
something nice home. We also exchanged Christmas gifts, and once again everyone managed to
take something nice home. A big 'thank you' to everyone for the generous and thoughtful
gifts they brought along to share for the raffle, dutch auction and Christmas gift
exchange.
In November, carnival glass collectors
Mike and Pam Mills from the UK visited Sydney. Jean Rogers made sure they
visited the homes of some of our club members and went home with some nice
Australian carnival glass. It is great that we can show our overseas colleagues this sort of hospitality, and
I would like to thank Jean for looking after Mike and Pam while they were in Sydney.
We are going to include a 'For Sale' page and a 'Wanted'
page on our club's Internet site. Only club members will be able to place ads on these
pages, so if you would like to place items on either one of these pages please let me
know. Including a photo with your 'For Sale' ad would certainly help to sell your item(s),
and I can scan photos for you.
It is wonderful to see the bond of
friendship and mutual respect that has formed between members of the club, and that is
what will carry our club from strength to strength in the coming years. Ray and Olive
invited their neighbour, Jenny Browne, to this meeting, and although at times I am sure
Jenny did not know what to make of the fun that everyone was having, she commented to me
at the end of the day about the feeling of warmth and friendship that surrounded her the
whole day. Congratulations everyone! That is the atmosphere we try to create at our
meetings, and it seems we have succeeded. If you haven't been to a club meeting for a
while, maybe it's time you came along again. We may even have got Jenny started in
carnival glass collecting. She bought a piece at the Dutch auction, and bought another
piece from the trading table before going home.
I hope you all have a great Christmas, and
are looking forward to another great year of carnival glass collecting. Our next meeting
will be held at the home of Ray and Jean Rogers in Lugarno, NSW on Sunday, 24 February
2002. The theme for the 'Show and Tell' table will be 'Waterworld' - patterns that have a
watery theme. So put your thinking caps on and see what sort of beautiful and unusual
patterns you can find to fit that theme. See if you can find a pattern that no-one else
has thought of!
I look forward to seeing everyone at the
next meeting. Hopefully some members we haven't seen for a while will be able to join us
this time.
