24 February 2002

Sunny and 25 degrees said the weather bureau, and we dressed accordingly. So why was it raining and 19 degrees when we drove into Sydney on Sunday, 24 February for our carnival glass meeting at the home of Ray and Jean Rogers in Lugarno? Fortunately, it eventually cleared and turned into a very warm sunny day, which was a match for the mood of our meeting – warm and sunny! 21 members attended and a great time was had by all – yet again.

If you haven’t been to a meeting yet, or haven’t been for a while, you don’t know what you are missing out on. Please come along and join us at the next meeting, which will be at the home of Allan and Althea Farrell in Darawank, NSW. Look for directions to Allan and Althea’s home later in this newsletter. Make a weekend out of it and join us for dinner on Saturday night as well. I apologise to those who were looking for directions in the last newsletter to the Rogers’ home in Lugarno. I have taken the newsletter editor aside and given him a severe flogging! Seriously, though, it was an oversight and it won’t occur again. Will it Allan?

The theme for our February meeting was ‘Waterworld’ and, as you can see from the photo at the right, members brought along lots of beautiful glass in this theme for us to look at. There was also lots of other beautiful carnival glass to look at as well. There is a list of the glass brought along later in the newsletter.

In the last newsletter I mentioned that we wanted to establish a ‘for sale’ page on our Internet site, and you may have noticed that it hasn’t appeared. This is because no-one sent me any details of items they had for sale. So, until someone sends me some details, the page won’t go up – it would look a bit silly putting a blank page up wouldn’t it? Here’s a great way for you to advertise that glass you have for sale to the whole world.

Our bulk order for the 8th edition of the Encyclopaedia of Carnival Glass has been placed. I am hoping to be able to bring the books along to the June meeting – if they arrive in time. The book is yet to go to print, but we are hoping that will occur later this month. Cost will be in the order of $46, which is much cheaper than they would have been if we had purchased them locally. I can’t wait for them to arrive!

We were pleased to welcome two new members to our club at the February meeting. Mother and son team Dianne and Maurice Geake from Windsor (pictured at right) found out all about us via the club’s Internet site – the first new members to have come to us this way. A bit of encouragement from Dorothy Butler didn’t go astray either I am told! Welcome Dianne and Maurice. I hope you enjoy your membership of our wonderful club Dianne and Maurice and learn lots about carnival glass at the same time.

The June meeting is our Annual General Meeting once again, and that means two things. Firstly it means that membership fees are due again, so please fill out the renewal form enclosed with this newsletter and mail it back to our club Secretary, Cathy Campbell, together with a cheque for $20, or better still bring it with you to the June meeting. Secondly, it means that it is election time again for our club’s executive positions. All positions will be declared vacant at the meeting and elections will be held. According to our constitution, nominations must be made in writing (using the enclosed form is the best way), signed by two members and accompanied by the written consent of the candidate. They must be lodged with the Secretary at least seven days prior to the meeting. Some executive members have indicated that they do not wish to continue in their position, so please give consideration to serving your club through the executive committee. The work is not onerous and your fellow club members will be forever grateful.

The theme for the ‘Show and Tell’ table at the June meeting will be plates, so dig out all your special or unusual plates and bring them along to show us.

That’s it from me. I hope to see you all at the June meeting in Darawank. Until then, take care, stay safe and happy, and happy carnival glass hunting!

President
