23 February 2003

Well, we needed the drought broken, so the club did its bit and we arranged our February meeting in Lugarno, and guess what? It rained. Seems like every time we go to Lugarno for a meeting it rains. But it was a warm, friendly and exciting meeting nonetheless, as you’ll read below, with 27 people coming along to join in the day.

We welcomed back Maurice Geake and his mother Dianne, who we haven’t seen for a while, and we also met Tania for the first (and hopefully not last) time (see photo below right). We also welcomed back Cindy and Kevin Mackley who we haven’t seen for a long time (see photo below left). And we welcomed a local friend of Ray & Jean Rogers, Judy Aldridge (see photo second below right).

The ‘Show & Tell’ table was packed tight with magnificent examples of the ‘Garden’ theme, and pieces members had bought recently, as you will see later in this newsletter. We were also very privileged to see the magnificent ‘Peacock & Urn’ aqua opalescent ice cream shape master bowl that we reported in the September 2002 newsletter. The owner very kindly brought the bowl along for us all to see, and carefully carried it around the room so that we could all see it. Like most of us, I was in awe of the sheer beauty of the bowl, but was not game to even touch it for fear of damaging it in some way. I would like to thank the owner for sharing this carnival glass rarity with us. We will all be very interested to see what price she gets for the bowl when it finally goes up for auction.

There was also some very nice glass on the ‘For Sale’ table at very reasonable prices (see photo further down below). This is a great opportunity to pick up some carnival glass bargains, or sell some of your own pieces. The club also benefits through a 5% commission on all sales.

Members who had not already seen it were able to watch the episode of Treasure Hunt which featured Ray and Jean Rogers and their carnival glass, and we also enjoyed watching a video of a presentation given by Dick Jamieson on carnival glass.

Our treasurer has reported that our club’s finances are at last in a healthy state, and we feel much more confident of our financial position now. The raffle at the 23 February meeting raised another $110 for the coffers, and the Dutch Auction raised $126. Thank you once again to all who bought raffle tickets or auction items, and to our raffle raconteur, Patrice Charnay for extracting the dollars from our pockets for the raffle, and to Alan Christoffersen for helping me extract the dollars for the auction.

The club has been approached to write an article on carnival glass for the ‘Country Decorator’ magazine. I have volunteered to prepare this article, based on the material on our Internet site. I will let you know what happens and when it might appear in print.

The club has also been approached to provide a speaker for the inaugural Dubbo antiques and collectibles fair to be held over the first weekend in July. At the time of writing, we are not sure who is going to prepare and deliver this talk, but the opportunity to participate in these events is too good to pass up. We will continue to promote the club at every opportunity, and will keep you informed on this particular matter as well.

Thanks to some diligent work by Patricia Nissen, plans for our proposed carnival glass  display are coming along nicely. The monthly antiques and collectibles fair held at Wentworth Park in Glebe is looking very attractive to us at the moment, and the organisers of this fair are keen for us to participate in one of their events. There is a separate room downstairs that is not used by the fair itself, but which is accessed from the room where the fair is held. It is large enough for our purposes, and will provide us with a good audience from the fair. We are pursuing a range of issues associated with the planned display, such as costs, lighting, necessary equipment, insurance, raffles and so forth before we make any firm decisions, but it is looking hopeful at this stage, possibly for some time early next year.

Your membership of the club is due for renewal on 1 July, and a renewal form appeared in last month’s newsletter. If you have not already done so, please complete the renewal form and send it, along with your cheque or money order, to Cathy Campbell as soon as possible. If it is not paid by the end of August your name will be removed from the membership register in accordance with our constitution, and you will no longer receive the newsletter. Sorry, but those are the rules. We’d hate to lose you as a member, though, so…….

Our next meeting in May will be our annual general meeting, and at that meeting we will be electing our new office bearers for the coming year. Please consider whether you can serve the club by taking on one of these roles for the year. Our club’s future depends on everyone taking their turn at sharing the office bearer roles, so please consider it. You will find a nomination form in this newsletter. If you wish to nominate yourself or someone else for a position, please make sure you fill the form out and return it to Cathy Campbell no later than 7 days prior to the May meeting.

Well, that’s it from me for the time being. I hope you are all enjoying autumn, and are finding lots of wonderful carnival glass. I look forward to seeing you all at the May meeting in Narellan, and seeing what you have found. The theme for the next meeting is ‘Vases’, so please bring along all your interesting and/or unusual vases for us to see.

Until then, take care and happy carnival glass hunting!
