25 May 2003

Eighteen members gathered on a cool and wet day on 25 May 2003 for the club’s annual general meeting at the home of Gary and Cathy Campbell in Narellan. But despite the weather it was another great meeting.

Once again, members brought along lots of nice glass for the ‘Show and Tell’ table, with the theme being vases. Please take a look at the photos at the bottom of this page. I do need to say that, while Gary showed us a beautiful vase, he does need some lessons in caring for flowers! See the photo below to see why.

There was also some nice glass on the ‘For Sale’ table, but the table was looking a little on the thin side. People don’t seem to be bringing along many pieces to sell lately. Is there a reason for this? I’m sure you are just forgetting aren’t you? So, please dig out those pieces you have been meaning to sell for a while, and bring them along to the next meeting so that someone else can have the joy of taking them home for a while.

Being the annual general meeting we did lots of official things like vote in a new Executive Committee for the coming year, and review the club’s finances.

A photo of the new committee appears below, and I welcome them on board for the next 12 months, and thank the outgoing committee for all their hard work during the last 12 months.

On the financial side I am happy to report another healthy year for the club. Our finances are once again firmer than they were 12 months ago, this time by a healthy margin. I think we can attribute this to three main things: the efforts of our raffle raconteur, Patrice Charnay, in separating you all from your loose change for the regular raffles (see photo below), and the generosity of those bringing contributions for raffle prizes; the generosity again of both donors and buyers at the Dutch auction; and the efforts of our Newsletter Editor in reducing the cost of producing and despatching the club’s quarterly newsletter. Don’t forget that if you are happy to receive the newsletter by e-mail instead of in hard copy, please let our newsletter editor know by e-mailing her at rhonda_bradford@yahoo.com.au. This will help to further reduce our newsletter costs.

The cost of our public liability insurance is remaining the same for at least another 12 months, so we should be able to consolidate our financial position even further in the next year.

Our membership continues to grow slowly, thanks largely to new members joining via the club’s Internet site. The Internet is doing a great job in raising the profile of our club. Since the last newsletter, the Internet site has moved to a new location. Please see elsewhere in the newsletter for details of this move, and don’t forget to update the bookmark in your Internet browser.

We are still working towards holding a display at the antiques and collectibles fair at Wentworth Park sometime next year. A number of us are going to the fair on 3 August to see a display by the Winton club. Why don’t you join us? We will then discuss our next move in the planning process for our own display at the August meeting.

On behalf of the club, Rhonda and I gave two presentations on carnival glass at the Dubbo Antiques and Collectibles Fair on 6 July. A lot of interest was shown in the presentations, and many club flyers were taken. We hope to see a few new members joining our ranks as a result. We both thoroughly enjoyed the show, and giving our presentations. If you know of any other opportunities we could take advantage of to raise the profile of both carnival glass and our club please let someone on the committee know, or just mention it at one of our meetings.

The year ahead is shaping up to be another great year for carnival glass and for our club, so why not come along and join in the fun at one of our meetings. Don’t forget our club’s mission statement – to provide a friendly forum for the exchange of information about carnival glass. That’s what we are here for, and that’s what we try to do.

I hope you are all surviving winter OK. Why not join for us for some warm hospitality at the home of Ray and Olive White in Bathurst on 24 August. At this meeting we will also be setting the calendar for next year’s meetings, so give some though to possible dates and themes before then. We would love to see you all. Until then, take care and happy carnival glass hunting! :-))
