24 August 2003
Well,
it was a cold and wet day when we gathered at the home of Ray & Olive
White in Bathurst on 24 August, but 23 of us gathered there for a great
day of fellowship and glass.
There
was some great glass on display in the ‘Peacocks’ theme, and you can see
some photos of some of the glass at the bottom of this page.
We
welcomed new members Mark & Vicki Strangwidge
of Orange to their first meeting, and approved membership applications
for a number of recently joined new members. Our membership numbers
continue to grow steadily, and this is great for the club.
At
this meeting we discussed the concerns of some members over the handling
of glass during the meetings. So we agreed to trial some simple rules to
put everyone’s minds at ease.
The
first rule is, please only bring 2-3 pieces for display on the ‘Show
& Tell’ table. While we all love to see the glass you bring along,
the tables have been getting very crowded at recent meetings, and this
increases the risk of damage occurring.
The
second rule is, please don’t handle other people’s glass without their
permission. It is amazing how simple it is to damage the glass with as
little as a ring on your finger.
The
third rule is, please don’t hold your glass over the table (and other
people’s glass) while showing it to an individual or the group. A simple
slip and you’ve destroyed someone’s treasure. In fact, we would prefer it
if you didn’t lift your glass off the table during ‘Show & Tell’,
but……
We’ll
give these simple rules a trial for a while and see how things go. We
don’t want people to leave their glass at home because they are afraid it
may get damaged.
Our
presentations at the recent Dubbo Antique and Collectables Fair went very
well, and we have received a few new members as a result.
We
have decided to go ahead with a club display at one of the monthly
antique and collectables fairs at Wentworth Park in Sydney, so we will be
investigating a number of issues over the next few months with a view to
putting our display on in March next year. We will keep you all informed
on our progress in this exciting project.
A
very important issue I would like to raise with you all is the result of
the vote at the last meeting on the special resolution relating to the
election of club office bearers. In the last meeting report I mentioned
our constitution’s requirement that the resolution be approved by 75% of
the club’s total membership, not just those attending the meeting, and I
urged you all to return your proxies if you could not attend the meeting
in person. Unfortunately not many of you took me seriously, so we did not
achieve the required 75%, and the resolution was not passed.
So,
at the November meeting, we will again be tabling this motion, along with
another motion modifying that part of our constitution which requires
that special resolutions be passed by 75% of the club’s total membership.
The details of these two motions appear in the newsletter, so please read
them carefully and, if you will not be attending the meeting on 23
November, PLEASE RETURN YOUR PROXY FORM. We have even included a stamped,
self-addressed envelope for you this time, so PLEASE, just take the time
to fill the form out and return it to us.
OK,
that’s enough of the heavy stuff. I look forward to seeing lots of you in
Kalaru for our November meeting. It’s going to
be a great Christmas meeting, in a great location, so why not make a
weekend out of it. Rhonda and I will be staying at Tathra for the
weekend. Where will you be staying?
Take
care and happy glass hunting!
