21 August 2005
Hi everyone
Well fellow club members, things are really starting to
come together with some of the projects that we’ve had in the pipeline
during the year. Largely due to the commitment of a few club members who
have poured a good deal of time and organization into projects that clearly
would not have seen the light of day otherwise.
These
projects include the club badge, in which an excellent design motif, the
‘Waratah & Gum Tips vase’ was drawn up by the creative talent of our very
own Lesley Smith. It was one of several design ideas that were considered
for our club badge, and finally voted upon as the chosen club emblem.
Actually, the final product turned out way better than I think any of us
could have expected, totally professional in every respect and no doubt a
collector’s item in the making!
A big thank-you to Wayne Delahoy for organizing the
behind the scenes stuff necessary to get this project up off the ground to
the ‘polished diamond’ that you now see, as above. Incidentally, these
badges can be purchased from our Club Treasurer, Ray Rogers, for the modest
sum of just $5.00, with all proceeds going to the club coffers.
On behalf of all of us in the club I’d like to extend our
sincerest thanks to both Bob & Lesley Smith for the outstanding, first up,
newsletter that they have produced. It was a first class effort for what is
no doubt an overwhelming task in trying to collate it all. I know I for one
was having quite a few sleepless nights wondering if the newsletter was
going to be at least equal to the excellent standard that Rhonda Delahoy set
over the past several years. My doubts were clearly put to rest when I saw
and read the August 2005 newsletter. Fantastic result guys. You’ve done
yourselves proud, keep up the great work!!!
Also, thanks to our Club Secretary, Mark Strangwidge, for
his efforts in the organization for the printing of the club application
leaflets. Again, these have turned out exceptionally well and present a very
professional image of our club and what we’re all about. Please avail
yourselves of these club leaflets for distribution at your local antique
shops or for your travels throughout the countryside. Mark has an ample
supply left, so don’t hesitate to ask for some. The more the merrier!
The topic of club shirts was raised by the committee,
then subsequently brought to the ‘General Business’ part of the meeting.
However, upon a majority vote against the introduction of a ‘club shirt’
that idea looks as if it has been shelved, at least for the time being
anyway. Just the same, a thank you to Mark for his enquiries with this
suggestion.
By now, hopefully, most of you have paid your annual club
subscription and are financial members of the club for yet another year.
Also this year you should have now received, along with your receipt, a
printed name tag/card which you can proudly wear to all of our upcoming
meetings. And it saves paying the ‘tax/fine’ for not wearing it! A thank you
to Byron Geake for his efforts in creating the tag/cards which have been
well received by most everyone I’ve spoken to.
Our club meetings have been blessed with such a good run
of weather for quite some time now and the August meeting at Dot and Bob
Butler’s home was no exception. In fact, it’s getting hard now to remember
when it last rained at one, so there’s a trivia question for you all to
think about!
Again, all of you can take a bow for a truly outstanding
display of ‘Opalescent Carnival Glass’ on show at this last venue. All of
the Carnival Glass pieces were of an excellent standard, although several
examples for either colour, shape or both were nothing short of
breathtaking.
The ‘theme’ calendar has been set again by the majority
vote for all of our meetings to come through until November 2006 inclusive.
As usual, all meetings will be on the third Sunday of February, May, August
& November.
The theme is amethyst Carnival Glass.
-
20 August 2006 at the home Iris & John Westren in Lugarno, NSW. The theme is
green Carnival Glass.
-
19 November 2006 at the home of Dot & Rob
Butler in Galston, NSW. The theme is unusual Carnival Glass.
Our upcoming meeting is on Sunday 20
November 2005 at the home of Lesley & Bob Smith at Beacon Hill, NSW and of
course it’s the club’s Christmas meeting, much like last year’s meeting at
Lorraine & John Friend’s home, where Santa is going to make a guest
appearance. Oh no, not again I hear you say!!
The theme of the meeting is
‘European’ Carnival Glass.
So, again don’t forget to
bring those pieces out that are bound to impress all there!
Rumour has it that Santa still needs help - in getting
presents for all of the good people in the club that is - so, please give it
some thought in bringing along a wrapped Christmas present for Santa to hand
out at the next meeting, as the old fellow in the red suit would be so
grateful if you did!!
You may recall that at our November 2003 meeting we voted
on two special resolutions regarding changes to our club’s constitution.
Through a combination of members in attendance and proxy votes mailed in,
both resolutions were passed by the required 75% of financial club members.
However, time constraints and other factors beyond our control resulted in
the NSW Office of Fair Trading declining to register our amendments. The
Office of Fair Trading had no difficulty with the changes we were proposing,
just some technicalities associated with the lodgement process.
Unfortunately this means that we need to vote on the resolutions once again,
and re-submit them to the Office of Fair Trading for their approval and
registration.
The detail of the two resolutions appears in the next
section of this newsletter. However, to enable us to put this matter to rest
once and for all, we need all financial members of the club to either attend
the November 2005 meeting to vote in person or to return one of the proxy
forms enclosed with this newsletter. If you cannot attend the November
meeting I urge you to please complete and return one of the enclosed proxy
forms. We’ve even supplied a stamped, self-addressed envelope to make the
process of returning the proxy as easy as possible. Remember, each member
has a vote, therefore each member must complete a proxy form if they are
unable to attend the meeting. There should be one proxy form enclosed for
every person at your household who is a financial member.
As always, I look forward to seeing you all again at our
next meeting.
Happy Carnival Glass hunting.
Your Club President
Maurice Geake
