G’Day Everybody
Well, I don’t know how everyone else is finding it out
there, but from my experience lately, it’s pretty tough going out there at
present if you’re trying to find much in the way of top quality carnival
glass! Especially if you’re trying to find anything in the way of Australian
carnival glass, and even more so, if its one with an animal icon. So, you
have my best wishes if you’re trying to look for a specific piece. I know my
patience is being thoroughly tested trying to do just that.
Now I’d say that has to be a good thing, really, for most
of us in the club who already have a pretty healthy amount of carnival glass
sitting in our display cabinets and on shelves in our homes. I know most of
us buy our carnival glass because we are so passionate at about it, but gee,
it’s very satisfying to know that there’s plenty of others out there that
want it just as much as we do. That can only be a good thing for the
long-term investment potential that many of these pieces will be worth in
years to come. Truth be known, since I’ve been in and around people involved
in the business of collecting carnival glass and also those who just buy and
sell it, there hasn’t been too many pieces that have gone backwards in their
value come to think of it!!
Everyone in attendance at our August meeting had an
enjoyable time indeed, I know I sure did! It was so good to catch up with
everyone again and even more so in seeing Cathy and Gary Campbell. Welcome
back guys, we all missed you heaps!
As you all know, we held the meeting at Iris and John
Westren’s home and because of their generous hospitality not to mention
John’s exceptional BBQ skills, no one left there hungry, that’s for sure.
Stay tuned for his BBQ tips book wherever good books are sold!
While we’re on the subject of literature, haven’t there
been some fantastic articles on carnival glass of recent. As previously
mentioned in the May newsletter, our very own Wayne Delahoy collated an
excellent article on all things carnival glass, and the September edition of
Country Collections magazine also had an informative account on the magic of
carnival glass.
At the August meeting, several issues were discussed.
Amongst those, were the themes and venues for our club meetings for the next
twelve months or so. Some really curious yet creative ideas were suggested
as possible themes, some of which were given the 'thumbs up' as definite
starters, and those that were not chosen will most certainly be given every
consideration in the future I’m sure.
And those themes which were suggested by our club members
included, 'Symmetrical and Geometrical', 'Fruits and Fakes', 'Long Distance
Carnival Glass purchases', 'Australian Carnival Glass', 'Drinking Vessels
and Breakfast Sets' and 'Whimsies'.
The
themes that were finally decided upon by our club members and where they are
to be held at can be found on the Coming
Meetings page and there’s something in there of interest to everyone!
There was considerable interest by many club members in
gaining media coverage for our club, as had been done previously. In
particular, on the ABC television show 'The Collectors'. The program is
certainly informative and has a diverse content of hobbies and collections
on display, making it a 'boon' for anyone who has a passing interest in
anything from antiques to items of total obscurity. Any exposure that our
club can receive on programs such as this is always going to be of
significant benefit and deserves further discussion.
Can you believe it, but our Christmas meeting has rolled
around again! And you know what that means…..apart from the fact that the
guy in the red suit is more than likely to, again, make a guest appearance,
we also need to remember to bring along a wrapped gift for our Secret Santa
segment.
In signing off, I’d like to thank everyone in the club
for your ideas, suggestions, input and continued support in the last
calendar year. Especially so, the efforts of Lesley and Bob Smith and the
amazing results evident by every newsletter produced by them, you can both
really take a bow, you are a credit to our club!!
I hope
to once again see you all at the next meeting, but if you are unable to make
it there, I hope you have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Safe and
Prosperous New Year!!, Cheers!!!
And don’t forget, the next meeting’s theme is 'Unusual'
Carnival Glass. And again, I can hardly wait to see what examples will be on
display for this one also!
Our next club meeting will be held on the 19 November
2006 at the home of Dot & Bob Butler, 28 Glen Street, Galston, NSW.
See you there!!!
As Always, happy carnival glass hunting.
Your Club President,
Maurice Geake
