G’day Everyone!
Of recent, I’ve noticed the
Australian Dollar is starting to reach into 'stratospheric' exchange rate
values against the US Dollar. So much so that many of us can probably hardly
remember this phenomena ever occurring in our lifetime or for those who can
remember it, it was a very long time ago indeed. The thought then occurred
to me as to what effects this may have on the value of carnival glass, if
any. It was only around five or so years ago, that if an article that was
worth $US100 you could easily estimate its value to be roughly double -
$A200. However, fast forward to the present and those estimates have closed,
dramatically. Whether that directly translates into a 'relative loss' on
paper in theory, I just don’t know. I’m still a big believer in the notion
that any item is still really worth whatever someone else is willing to pay
for it. It all comes down to finding the right buyer for anything for that
matter.
Regardless of the
'investment' value of the carnival glass we buy from time to time, most of
us I’m sure buy it for its timeless beauty, its uniqueness and the sheer
exhilaration we get when we know in our hearts that we secured that piece we
have been longing to have in our collection.
Our May meeting was held at
Carissa’s and my home and we both hope everyone in attendance had a pretty
darn good time. We did. It had been quite some time since we last hosted a
meeting, but gee its rewarding to see everyone there and humbling to know
how far some of you had to come to make it. I’d like to thank my folks,
Dianne and Byron and Carissa’s folks, Annette and Peter for helping out with
the catering and logistical arrangements on the day.
The theme, as you may
recall, was 'Whimsies & Furthest Distance of Purchase'. And there was plenty
of CG on display as well. As you are probably aware, my collection is only
'Australiana' and then basically focussed on the fauna and flora pieces, but
I certainly could have made an exception to my collection rule to have that
red CG piece of Mark and Vicki Strangwidge’s sitting in the middle of my CG
cabinet. What an incredibly stunning piece of glass it is too!!! And what a
find!!!
It was really quite
pleasing, and somewhat a relief, to see that there was no shortage of club
members willing to either stand for re-election or stand for vacant
positions in the club election. The club is currently experiencing an
extended run from several of its officers, yours truly included. I would
like to sincerely thank those who have continued their positions for another
year, and of course welcome aboard those of you who have been newly elected.
We all look forward to working with you in the next year, or maybe longer,
who knows, as I’m about to start my fourth year as your club president and
I’m still enjoying it!
Don’t forget our next
meeting, to be held at the home of Jean & Ray Rogers in Lugarno NSW on
Sunday 19th August 2007, is where we all want to see those
'Geometrical & Symmetrical' shapes of CG brought out of those cabinets for
the display table. And also, any suggestions for themes for the next year’s
club meetings will be gratefully acknowledged. Club subs are due, so don’t
forget to finalize them if you haven’t already, ‘cos you wouldn’t want to
miss out being a club member, would you!!!
In all, everything in the
club is rolling pretty nicely right now and it’s a credit to you all as club
members to be in such a favourable position, not just financially but also
for great times and great friendships that have evolved over the years. It
really is an honour to be your president again and I’m looking forward to
all its challenges for another year.
And as an expectant dad
sometime early in 2008, I’m told that everything in life, and its priorities
will change, forever. Better lock up that Carnival Glass then, hey!!!!
See you all at the next
meeting.
Happy Carnival Glass
hunting and watch out for those fakes!!
Your Club President,
Maurice Geake.
