G’Day Everyone
Another year has come and gone, and as to where it
went, well, it beats me! I trust that everyone enjoyed themselves over the
festive season and hopefully Santa was reasonably kind to you all in the
presents department also!
Looking back on last year, it's really encouraging to
see our club is still steadily growing in club membership numbers. In fact,
I can’t even remember the last time that we didn’t have at least a couple of
applications for new membership. This I believe has been largely due to the
club’s informative web site. Apart from the fact that our club application
forms can be printed off from there, there’s also a plethora of photos,
historical details and glass offered for sale of all shapes and sizes for
the hobby collector right through to those with a serious passion for
carnival glass.
In time to come, no one really knows how much carnival
glass is going to be offered for sale in the market place. I for one
certainly don’t profess to know either, but what I do know is that its all
about being in the right place at the right time, there’s no doubt about
that.
Just listening to others who have bought carnival glass
you really wonder whether if it’s a little bit like winning a lottery
sometimes. The fact that you can walk into a shop or visit an antique fair
and find nothing is par for the course, but I can’t begin to tell you how
frustrating it is only to hear someone else say at the next meeting
something like, “I was at the same place that same day and found a dark
kangaroo master bowl in pristine condition for just a couple of dollars”. It
kind of makes you wonder where on earth you were looking at the time!
All of our quarterly meetings last year were, apart
from the fact, financially very beneficial for the club, but also a heck of
a lot of fun to be a part of. For those of you who are club members who
haven’t attended a club meeting for some time, do yourself a favour this
year and come along, you’ll be glad you did!
A sincere thank you to Lesley and Bob Smith for the
truly excellent job of hosting our November (Christmas) meeting. Again, you
have both outdone yourselves with such a great variety of food, drinks and
good old Christmas cheer.
As you are probably aware, our upcoming February
meeting is on Sunday the 17th, and is to be held at the home of
John and Lorraine Friend in Blackheath NSW, and the theme for this one is
'Roses and Hearts'.
And it’s also 'Dutch Auction' time! So, try to think
of something different, unique or special that would really make a nice
mystery article between now and then to bring along.
Before I sign off this time, I’d just like to take this
opportunity to give you all the great news, that Carissa and I welcomed the
birth of our happy and healthy baby girl, Montana Rose. She was born at
Hawkesbury Hospital on the 7th January 2008 weighing in at 9 lbs
1 oz, or 4120 grams, and 54 cm long. Carissa and Montana are doing really
well, and as for me, well, lets just say I might be a bit sleep deprived,
but I’m the proudest Dad in the world!
As always, happy carnival glass hunting, and see you
at the next meeting!
Your club president,
Maurice Geake
