G’Day Everyone

They say there’s only two certainties in life - death and taxes. But I reckon there might just be another one at least. While ever there’s carnival glass out there, guaranteed there’ll be a collector wanting to add it to their expanding collection.

I guess this theory is proven not just by all of us lovers of carnival glass but anyone who has a passion in collecting just about anything that’s worth collecting, whatever it may be.

Now, I have to confess that sometimes it may be quite difficult to convince a non-collector of the sheer exhilaration one experiences in 'nailing' that carnival glass piece that you’ve been longing to have in your collection, just so that it makes it a bit more special than the next persons. I should know, I’ve tried explaining this to my father with little success I must say!

What truly ceases to amaze me though is what people will actually collect!

Judging by a number of different television programs on all things collectable and antique, it appears, by all accounts then, there are absolutely no boundaries in what people are in to. This includes such things as 'plum bobs', the weight things that were used by surveyors and builders before laser light levels, clothes pegs, buttons, soaps and believe it or not, even human hair! Weird huh?

The recent meeting held at Lorraine and John Friend’s home wasn’t only an enjoyable meeting as usual, but also incredibly successful on the financial front. So thank you to everyone who bought something along and purchased an auction item.

A special thanks to Wayne Delahoy for his Dutch Auctioning skills on the day and for organizing the final touches in the completion of our club’s new Internet site. Now lets see the avalanche of new members that’ll bound to be heading our way!

I like would to again extend a hearty welcome to our newest members of our club. Ivy Ashcroft and Andrew Mitchell, both of whom were present at the February meeting and certainly appear to have been definitely 'bitten' by the carnival glass collecting bug. Happy CG collecting guys, and we all look forward to seeing you both again at our future meetings.

Our next meeting is to be held at the home of Dot and Bob Butler’s at Galston, NSW on 18 May 2008. Its also our club’s Annual General Meeting and I would encourage all of those members who haven’t held a position of office for some time to give the idea some thought between now and then.

Or to quote an altered phase from the American President John F. Kennedy, “Do not ask what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club”!

As you may already be aware, the theme for the May meeting is salvers and compotes. And I have a feeling that we're all going to see some very impressive examples of carnival glass for this occasion. Don’t miss this one!

Just before I sign off, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the office bearers for their valued input and enthusiasm over the last year and all of you as club members for your continuing support and patronage!

As always,

Happy carnival glass hunting and see you at the next meeting!

Your club President,

Maurice Geake.
