16 November 2008

G’Day Everyone

I trust that you have all enjoyed the festive season and that some of you were fortunate enough to receive an Emu comport or maybe even a Kiwi master bowl….  you lucky people!!!

Now that another Christmas and New Year is done and dusted, doesn’t it kind of make you wonder whether its worth all the worry, stress and confusion, not to mention the spending…..and did I mention spending???

Without sounding a bit like a scrooge, I’m certain the real winners in the end are the retailers. Not that there’s anything completely wrong with that, as some retailers probably have families too, but it never ceases to amaze me the exorbitant prices that are asked before Christmas and the absolutely 'bargain basement' prices after Christmas. Just bear in mind, they are still turning a profit as well.

I guess the moral to this is to be savvy about when and where you buy. This doesn’t just apply to buying carnival glass but just about anything really. There are some 'golden rules' to be mindful of when buying which are; never purchase anything on 'raw emotion', never show or reveal to the seller that you 'must have' the item regardless of the asking price, only be prepared to pay for what you had set aside as a logical figure to own it and never pay more than you can afford or for that matter, what its worth. Ultimately, common sense is the best strategy you can arm yourself with!

Yet again, another thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all who attended the November ’08 meeting. Vicki and Mark were our hosts for this meeting and did an excellent job of ensuring that everything had a very festive feel to it. Santa was very impressed indeed!

Our next club meeting in February is 'Dutch Auction' time, and will be hosted by John and Lorraine in Blackheath NSW. So please try to remember to bring something along, wrapped and ready for auctioning. This is a great fundraiser for our club and it goes a long way towards helping keeping our costs of membership, the newsletter, insurance etc in check.

The theme for this meeting is 'Fruit Salad'. It’s an excellent theme in that just about everyone would have a piece of carnival glass that relates in some way to this theme. We should see some interesting and impressive examples bought along to this one and I can hardly wait!

So, I hope to see ya there!!

And as Always,

Drive Safe & Happy Carnival Glass Hunting!

Your Club President,

Maurice Geake

.....and I'm not even going to think about what Santa was getting up to!
