G’Day
Everyone
Has
anyone noticed lately the drought that has hit carnival glass supply offered
for sale in shops, markets and fairs? Now, I’ve either been looking in
the wrong places, which I doubt as these were the places that largely
helped build my collection up, or too many pieces now are only offered
for sale on the Internet. If that’s the case, its pretty sad really and
could well mean it's only a matter of time before the opportunity of
buying an item based on looking, touching and feeling first, is
history!!!
Having
said that, you can’t really blame the owners of the shops and stalls, as
the Internet has decimated their retail market beyond comprehension. Just
the shear 'convenience' alone that the Internet offers and being able to
shop 24 hours per day, all without having to set foot outside your home,
is just impossible to compete against. I’ve asked numerous retailers and
shopkeepers in the last six months or so and found the 'common
denominator' to “where is all your carnival glass offered for sale?”,
being the reply, “why would we bother when it's probably on the net for
sale, often cheaper than what we would have to price it for in the shop.”
I,
for one, really used to love going in to a shop or to a market fair just
for the 'thrill of the hunt', trying to find that piece that I needed to
make my collection just that more complete. And also enjoying the
interaction with the retailer, sharing their opinions and experiences.
The
Internet has a lot to answer for, both good and bad, but this is, I
think, one of the real examples of ruining what was once a truly
enjoyable experience.
Enough
said about that! What an amazing day for all in attendance at John and
Lorraine’s home at the February meeting, and on behalf of the club I’d
again like to thank them for their hospitality. As you probably already
know the Dutch Auction was held, and very successfully so I might add.
Our auctioneer of the day, Webmaster Wayne Delahoy, did an excellent job
of revving up the crowd into a spending frenzy, and this was reflected by
how much money was raised for the club on the day. A truly great result.
As
you might recall, the theme for the meeting was all things relating to
fruit - fruit salad to be exact. Again, what an extraordinary display of
carnival glass there was for all to enjoy, a real feast of colour and
design. What I personally found incredibly interesting was the editorial
given by Andrew Mitchell. He had researched and collated information on
the Grape & Cable design, and gave us a detailed insight of the
intricacies associated with it. Great work Andrew!
Our
next meeting in May is the AGM. And as usual, all positions are duly
voted on by the club members. Please give some consideration to holding
one of these positions if you haven’t done so, or even if its been quite
some time since you last did. You’ll really will find it quite a rewarding
thing to do!
Ray
& Olive will be our hosts for this meeting that will feature all
things 'linked to water' as the theme. I think just about everyone would
have something related to water sitting in his or her collection
somewhere!
And
don’t forget they’ve moved!!
As
Always,
Drive
Safe & Happy Carnival Glass Hunting!

Club President,
